Znanstvena istraživanja na Antarktici

Najhladniji, najnepristupačniji, najsuhlji, najnenaseljeniji, najzagonetniji, najčišći, najekološkiji, najmirotvorniji, naj, naj, naj,.. najznanstveniji, kontinent. Antarktika.
Na Antarktici godišnje boravi i radi oko četiri tisuće znanstvenika različitih znanstvenih profila iz cijeloga svijeta. Proučavanjem ovog jedinstvenog i najosjetljivijeg ekosistema na Zemlji, pokušavaju pronaći odgovore i “ključ” za razumijevanje prošlih, sadašnjih i budućih promjena na našem planetu.

South Pole Gets Colder

The South Pole has been experiencing the coldest weather since record-keeping began 40 years ago. The National Science foundation which administers research at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, said the average South Pole temperature during July was minus 86.8 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking the previous record of minus 83. degrees in July 1965. The coldest daily ttemperature recorded in the month on July 29, was a minus 108.2.
July is the Southern Hemisphere`s coldest month. But cold as it is, the South Pole Station has never reached the bitter extremes recorded at Russia`s Vostok Station on Antarctica`s polar plateu. The Guinness Book of World records says the world`s coldest temperature was recorded at Vostok Statio on July 21, 1983: minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
During the current winter season, 28 men and women are living at the South Pole. The Pole residents, scientists and technicians, often observe an annual ceremony entitling them to membership in the “300 Club”. On the first day the outside temperature drops to minus 100 degrees, initiates briefly roast themselves at 200 degrees Fahrenheit in the station sauna before rushing naked outside their headquarters building, thereby experiencing a drop in the temperature of 300 degrees.

The Coldest Profession

Scientists have found what appears to be the world`s southernmost red-light district.
Female penguins on Ross Island (some 800 miles from the South Pole) are prostituting themselves for small stones, which they use as building blocks for nesting platforms.
“What the single male gets is copulation”, says Dr. Fiona Hunter of Cambridge University, who`s observed the avian sex workers in action. “He may also get offspring”. For the female, there is a reward for a job well done. Satisfied customers sometimes tip with a second round of stones.

O autoru
